Leo Belgicus

[TBD]

"Leo Belgicus" by Petrus Kaerius. Dated 1622.

Map of the Continental Dutch Territory in 1622 depicted as a "Belgian Lion" as per Michael Von Aitzing's initial design, which referred to Julius Caesar's description of the Gallic tribe the "Belgae" being the strongest of this region. The use of this symbol was deemed a fitting metaphor for the Dutch in its war with the Spanish during the Eighty Years' War. (1568 - 1648)
